The short answer to your question is "Yes". The ten commandments which are the more
well known were distilled from an original list of more than 600 commandments.

"religious conservatives generally believe that the Ten Commandments we currently have were given directly to Moses by God".

Unfortunately for the devout believers, that is not possible. It is not possible because Moses never existed. Like many well known heroes, leaders, in the bible, Moses is an amalgam of well known dieties and god like personalities which have been plagiarized from earlier civilizations' religions.

Not only were the ten commandments originated in earlier religions, but almost he entire Old Testament and Torah, and Pentateuch was plagiarized as well.

How ever, religious liberals who accept that the Bible was written by multiple authors believe that each of the three versions comes from a different hand. According to the Documentary Hypothesis, the version in Exodus 20 was written by the “E” author between 922 and 722 BCE, the Exodus 34 version was written by the “J” author between 848 and 722 BCE, and the Deuteronomy version was written by the “D” author around 622 BCE.

In summary. Nothing that is found on the bible today is original. Virtually all of the stories, fables, and laws originated much earlier on, and was incorporated into the major religions which exist today.
