Poland in The Rockies Canmore 2004:
An intensive, eleven day program set in the magnificent Canadian Rockies -the Tatras of the West- in Polish history , culture and contemporary issues designed specifically for North American youth of Polish background. Poland in the Rockies will bring together forty bright young people from across the continent to meet outstanding scholars and other public figures, forge new friendships, and foster pride in their identity and links to the world-wide Polish community. The program will provide information, perspective and skills for future leaders.
"Q: Why is the language of instruction not Polish?
A: Most, if not all, Polish-Americans and Polish-Canadians born and raised in North America speak, read, and write much better in English than in Polish. In many cases, they speak no Polish at all.
We want to eliminate the language barrier that prevents so many Polish Americans and Canadians from learning more about their Polish heritage and from taking part in a lively discussion of Polish and Polonian issues. This does not mean that we don?t encourage the learning of the Polish language. In fact, a greater appreciation of their Polish heritage could serve as a great motivator to study the language."
